Paul Scully, Conservative MP for Sutton and Cheam, has been in the news for all the wrong reasons this week. After voting against the Labour proposal to extend school meal vouchers to cover the half term holiday, he justified the Tories’ stance on TV, saying that children had gone hungry under previous governments too.

Mr Scully later explained that in the government’s opinion, there were better ways to end child hunger than the school meal voucher scheme supported by footballer Marcus Rashford - who has 3.7 million followers on Twitter and recieved an MBE for his actions against child poverty.

The people of Sutton and Cheam are not convinced - today they protested by laying plates with anti-child poverty slogans outside the local Conservative HQ in Sutton.

According to the Food Foundation, 14% of families with children have experienced food insecurity in the last 6 months. This is no way for a civilised society to behave!

And in case you’re wondering about our other local MP Elliot Colburn (Conservative) - he didn’t vote in the debate. He is yet to give an explanation.
